Remorse Chapter 2: Darkest Hours
Shawn’s rapid peregrination back to Salem came all but swiftly, just as twilight claimed its mark over the sleepy town and shadows danced briskly within the dusking hour, he inhaled sharply the cool February air, some how refreshing from the thick Californian clement. It felt good to be home, after a hellish weekend of lectures and briefings that seemed rather insufficient to the task at hand. Leading only to both mental and physical exhaustion, a nice shower and some quality time with his girlfriend would do Shawn some good. Of course Belle had never known about the whole cloak and dagger part of her beloved boyfriend’s life but nor did the rest of his family and friends, as far as they were concerned he had a weekend baseball tournament in a neighbouring town; that’s the way it had to remain…for their own safety.
Family truly was everything no matter how strenuous life got they would always be there, the building block to ones social and emotional consciousness, with out it today just wouldn’t be today, but tomorrow… an absent minded contour of dream impinged apparitions. This was a concept Rex knew all to well, never having the chance to love or be loved; as a child only feeling desolation and anguish, never the warmth that came with true glorification, you could just tell by the bereaved look presenting it’s self with in his eyes. Even the most infinitesimal glimpse of happiness that was bestowed among Rex’s life, he found would dissipate quickly, yanked away, a tease; proving that he’d never be content. Then their was Mimi, trying day after day to prove she’d always be there for him, constantly teaching him what it meant to love, to Rex a foreign emotion.
“Happy Valentines Day” she whispered softly while hugging his consolidated form that sat speechlessly staring out a some what glazed window on the far side of his musky apartment.
“It’s all my fault! How could I’ve believed Tony was the killer? Now he’s dead…because of me!” Rex scoffed angrily, in no mood to acknowledge the day’s festivities.
“Rex, what happened to Tony was horrible but no matter what you said to him it’s not your fault, we all believed he was guilty so you just can’t blame yourself… I…I won’t let you!”
Mimi couldn’t sit by and watch…putting himself through this again after just starting to get over the morning of his sister and father, no matter what you’d say, it wasn’t healthy. Weariness was beginning to proclaim Rex’s features, dark pungent circles enumerating his eyes; craving a good nights rest but to no avail nightmares were all that came, covert and secluded with in sub consciousness.
“Hey, why don’t we rent some movies and curl up on the couch?” Mimi suggested, desperately trying to entice her boyfriend from his current frame of mind.
Rex just shook his head plaintively and returned his gaze to the window. He felt so bad that he couldn’t be more of a boyfriend to Mimi, the kind of man she truly deserved, after all she’d stood by him through everything; never criticizing the mistakes he’d made always trying to show him how to love how to be…human.

“Ryan, call for you on line one”
Murdock growled some what displeased on how much his ‘wife to be’ called, distracting Sullivan from agency business.
“Hello?” Ryan quipped light heartedly into the receiver, while toiling idly with a pen in his hands.
“Thank you for the rose” Cassie’s sweet voice reciprocated through the line.
“There’s more where that came from my love, if you do me the pleasure of joining me for dinner tonight that is.”
“I’d be honoured”
“Glad to here it, I’ll pick you up after work, if that’s alright”
“Oh Ryan, that’d be great, thank you…for everything”
“I’d do anything and everything for you Cass”
Cassie quickly exchanged good-byes with her soon to be husband and hung up the phone with a silent click. God how she loved him, every moment longing to be with him, Cassie had finally found true happiness. Amazing really three month’s ago thinking her life was over, being torn apart from her brother and the only family she had left for the preservation of lives, only to meet the love of her life and now to finally be wed: someone who really cared about her.
The rest of the day passed all too quickly, as Cassie now stood in the front porch of Ryan’s apartment patiently anticipating his arrival.
“Umm… Ryan there’s something I’d like to do before dinner if that’s alright?” Cassie jeered all too lovingly to her fiancé as he walked in the door, before kissing him quickly on the cheek.
“Sure, as long as it doesn’t take too long, I’m starved!”
“You’re always hungry” she giggled
“I’d like too stop by the safe house to umm…talk with my father”
Ryan grinned at this, Cassie and Roman had certainly come a long way since his ‘murder’ on her parents wedding night, at first things were a little awkward, they fought most the time but with in the last month something changed, the began to really act like father and daughter.
“So you’d like to let Roman in on our little engagement hunh?”
“Yeah if that’s okay with you”
“Of course it is my sweet”
The door opened with a strident click, as two figures evident with in its depths, Roman, Cassie’s father sat dexterously on a large oak bar stool in the some what spacious kitchen, conversing with his friend and former Salem PD commander Abraham Carver. It really was quick a site both vet cops dressed in brightly coloured beach shits and slurping back beers out of large glasses with little umbrellas floating in them.
“Well…you two are really liven’ it up aren’t ya?” Ryan gibed as he entered,
“May as well make the best out of this whole situation, we’re on a spectacular beach in the middle of California, the sun is shinning, the temp’s way over 90 and it’s winter.”
Abe grinned trying not to show how much he really did miss his wife and son especially on Valentines Day.
“How’s my favourite daughter? Have any plans for Valentine’s Day?” Roman questioned, looking lovingly at Cassie before embracing her.
“Actually…Daddy, Ryan and I have an announcement to make…we’re…well…we’re engaged.”
Ryan winced at the sound of this unsure about how exactly his father in law to be would react.
“That’s incredible; I knew Ryan was right for you from the moment you met.”
“You…you don’t think it’s too soon?” Ryan stuttered, shocked he actually had Roman’s blessing, no her brother from what he heard would be a different story.
“If there’s something I’ve learned from all this, it’s that life’s way to short to dwell on regret so if you two want to get married, then do it, Ryan I’d be honoured to have you as a son.”
“Thank you sir, I’m sorry you couldn’t spend Valentines Day with your wife.”
“Hey its okay, once this all gets straitened out there will be plenty of Valentines Days to shear together, along with every other occasion.”
“hmmm…”
“Thanks Daddy” Cassie hugged him gratefully, before being swept up into her boyfriends arms; she finally knew what it felt to feel love, real love.

“So do you have the virus?” Amador growled violently while typing the nine digit access code for the transfer of 140 million in US funds to Drazen’s bank account.
“it’s right here” Drazen retorted after checking to make sure the money was all there, he handed Amador a vile containing an obtrusive crystalline substance.
“When are you planning to unleash it?”
“Tonight…”
